ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Recently, the list of Epsterin-Barr Virus (EBV)-associated diseases has been growing. It is now known that there are two types (type 1 & 2) of EBV, but it has yet to be fully investigated as to whether type B EBV differs in any way from type A virus in terms of geographical distribution or disease association. We performed this study to find out the prevalence of the two types of EBV in EBV seropositive healthy children and adults by using one step Polymerase chain reaction(PCR). METHODS: Fifty-four viral capsid antigen (VCA) IgG positive healthy children (5 to 15 yrs of age) and 60 healthy adults (20 to 50 yrs of age) were involved in this study. DNA extracted from saliva samples of healthy study children and adults were subjected to amplification using the modified one step general PCR, which was developed by M. Kunimoto et al for detection of EBV types. And B95-82 cells (type 1) and Jijoye cells (type 2) were used as positive controls, and K-562 cells was used as a negative control. RESULTS: EBV was detected in mouth washing saliva of 8 (14.8%) of 54 healthy children. Five EBV detected cases contained type 1 and the remaining three cases contained type 2. EBV was detected in mouth washing saliva of 21 (35%) of 60 healthy adults. Twenty EBV detected cases contained type 1 and the remaining one was type 2. In total, EBV was detected in the saliva samples of 29 cases (25.4%), and 25 (86.2%) contained type 1. CONCLUSION: The results of our study indicate that type 1 is highly dominant in Korea, and EBV excretion is more frequent in EBV positive healthy adults compared to EBV positive healthy children in Korea.

ABSTRACT

Primary carcinoma of the urethra in women is extremely rare and most are reported to be either squamous or transitional carcinomas. Adenocarcinoma of the female urethra represents approximately 10% of primary urethral neoplasms and clear cell variant is a rare but histologically distinct tumor. We report two cases of clear cell adenocarcinoma of the female urethra.

ABSTRACT

Nephrogenic adenoma is a rare benign metaplastic proliferation of urothelium, which is associated with chronic irritation, infection or trauma. We report nephrogenic adenoma in the urinary bladder containing stone.

ABSTRACT

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis is relatively rare and its prognosis is very poor. It is believed that the transitional cell epithelium undergoes metaplasia caused by the presence of infection and chronic irritation by renal stone. We observed a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis associated with squamous cell carcinoma in situ of ureter in a 68-year-old female patient. But she had no history of urolithiasis or urinary infection in situ.

ABSTRACT

Carcinosarcoma of the esophagus is regarded as a rare malignant neoplasm composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. Esophageal carcinosarcoma classified into 3 subgroups, pseudosarcoma, so called carcinosarcoma, and true carcinosarcoma. we report a case of large polypoid tumor consist of squamous cell carcinoma, undifferentiatred small cell and spindle cell proliferation. The patient was 47 year-old man who had suffered from dysphasia and substernal chest pain for 2 months. A protruded tumor in size of 8x4x3.5 cm with stalk was found in midesophagus at the level of 28 cm from the incisor. The tumor was round with smooth surface stained with Lugol solution. There were multiple erosions at the stalk of the tumor, Partial esophagectomy and esophagogastrostomy was done, Undifferentiated small cell was confirmed by immunoreactivity to neuron specific enolase and electron microscopic findings.

ABSTRACT

In 1947, Liver described adenoid squamous cell carcinoma under the title of "adenoacanthoma of sweat gland". This tumor is not rare, but reported cases in literatures were relatively few. The tumor were frequently found in the sun-exposed skin; such as face, ear, neck etc.. The cases involving non-sun-exposed area, such as oral and labial mucosa, nosopharynx and vulva etc., were also reported. Therefore, the relation between the pathogenesis of adenoid squamous cell carcinoma and sun damage has been still debated. Immunohistochemical studies have recently suggested that this tumor is squamous cell carcinoma undergoing acantholysis. The authors experienced a case of adenoid squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva in a seventy-one year old female patient. She had suffered from itching sensation on vulva for 10 years, and palpable mass on vulva for 1 month. On gross examination, a pale gray pigmentation and erosion, was noted at the right labia major, the minor extending left labia major and minor. On microscopic examination, nests of atypical epithelial cells extending into the cornium showed an adenoid architecture. These were composed of a peripheral layers of cuboidal cell in a lacy pattern. And the glandular spaces contained dyskeratotic acantholytic tumor cells in central portion. Therefore we diagnosed this case as adenoid squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva.
